Guest teachers (substitute teachers) in Battle Creek Public Schools are crucial in ensuring student learning can continue while a teacher is sick or otherwise unavailable. In Battle Creek Public Schools, guest teachers serve in one of three primary roles:
1) Daily Guest Teachers
- These teachers serve in a traditional substitute role based on needs that arise on a day-to-day basis. Daily Guest Teachers enjoy the flexibility of picking up as many or as few shifts based on daily availability.
- Compensation: $150 per day
2) Building Guest Teachers
- Each building is assigned 1-2 building guest teachers based on the size of the student population. These individuals report to a building each day, ready to help out as needed. They may help fill in for a sick teacher one day and serve as a classroom assistant or student reading partner the next. Building Guest Teachers may be assigned to other BCPS schools temporarily on an as-needed basis.
- Compensation: $150 per day paid in full- or half-day increments. No pay on days when school is not in session, including closings due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances.
3) Long-term Guest Teachers
- Long-term guest teachers are assigned to a specific class or subject when a teacher is unavailable for an extended period. In the event of a teacher vacancy, long-term guest teachers may also be assigned until a full-time teacher is identified to fill the role on a more permanent basis. They teach every day that school is in session and participate fully as a member of the building staff, including, taking daily attendance, planning lessons, grading work, attending staff meetings, and participating in parent-teacher conferences. Long-term guest teachers also have the option to participate in professional development (paid as a normal work day).
- Compensation: $230/day OR $180/day plus up to $1,000/month toward out-of-pocket costs for healthcare benefits provided by EduStaff. No pay on days when school is not in session, including closings due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances.
