On Tuesday, June 22, the Battle Creek Public Schools Adult Education program celebrated 19 new graduates. After enduring the many changes and challenges that come with a global pandemic, the achievement was made even more significant for this group of graduates.
Adult Education Teacher Barbara Giallombardo shared, "This group has worked even harder, I would say, because of the COVID virus. We went back to school in September and then we had to go back to remote learning for a while which didn't work as well as we had hoped for a lot of people because many of them had children at home that they were trying to help educate. But they persevered and they kept going and they kept working at it and once we were able to get back together in person, they just picked up where they needed to be and kept right on working."
Adult Education graduate Brandon Moore said this was an important next step for him in his education and his career. "It took a lot to get here" he said. "A lot of trials, tribulations, and struggles but it means a lot to me. It makes my family proud to see me progressing and keep building in life."
Adult Education is a post-secondary education program. The program’s certified teachers and staff are committed to working with adult learners to identify and work toward their educational and career goals.
Teachers, learners, and community partners identify and work together to remove barriers such as childcare, transportation, and testing fees, that might keep an adult learner from reaching their academic and career goals. Thanks to partnerships with the Battle Creek Family YMCA, Calhoun County Correctional Facility, Community Action, and Denso Manufacturing, certified teachers are available on a limited bases at additional sites in Battle Creek as well.
