The Battle Creek Area Mathematics and Science Center (BCAMSC), a unique STEM learning experience for high school students from 15 area school districts, is educating the scientific and technical leaders of tomorrow. Not only do students receive rigorous and relevant academic experiences, but the Center's staff are also focused on helping to prepare students to thrive in STEM careers after graduation.
This year, in recognition of Ada Lovelace Day, a day celebrating the world's first programmer, all BCAMSC junior and senior girls had the opportunity to hear from and meet with several women serving as leaders in their fields for Kellanova, the global snacking, international cereal and noodles, plant-based foods and North American frozen breakfast company formerly known as Kellogg.
Following a greeting from Kellanova's Global Chief Digital and Information Officer Lesley Salmon, the students had an opportunity to break off into smaller groups and hear some of the more personal experiences from the Kellanova executives about their career journeys.
Kellanova's Director of Information Technology Parri Gignac shared, "Women in STEM are an underrepresented group, and it's important that we're working to make a place at the table for everybody."
Gignac said the visit to the Math and Science Center was the first of several intentional visits to schools around the country as the company makes a concerted effort to inform and recruit young women into the field.
"We want to make sure that these young ladies, some of the best and the brightest out there, understand that there is a career path for them in technology," Gignac added.
