Last week, in recognition of Black History Month, Battle Creek Central High School students participated in a themed spirit week, learned about important Black figures throughout American history, and capped off the week with an incredible pep assembly on Friday.
The event included the singing of the Black National Anthem, ‘Lift Every Voice and Sing’ by a choir of staff and students, a fun performance from the Bearcat cheer squad, an African drumming and dance performance, a step routine, and encouragement to attend college from the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, and more.
The goal of the assembly was to provide a fun celebration of Black excellence that students throughout the school would enjoy to finish the week. From the staff and cheer team members joining in on the African dancing to the student body coming together at mid-court to dance along to the DJ at the conclusion of the event, the joy in the room could be felt throughout the high school’s gymnasium from start to finish.
