This week, every BCCHS freshman scholar had the chance to tour the school's own Health Care Simulation Lab. BCCHS Nursing & Health Care Pathways instructor Deana Waterman shared, "The students were very excited to be able to see all of the wonderful features of the lab and get their hands on real healthcare equipment. There were a lot of good questions from the students about these programs."
Opened in fall 2020, the lab gives students in the BCCHS Career Academies Health Care and Nursing pathways opportunities to experience hands-on learning with access to the equipment and experience that is typically found in real-life nursing and health care facilities only, including:
- A replica of an ambulance
- Stretchers, tables, and lifts
- “Practice patients” in the form of fully-articulated, high-fidelity medical dummies
The Sim Lab is also a state-approved training site for Certified Nursing Assistant and Emergency Medical Technician certification programs. Many thanks to teachers Josh Harter and Casey Bess for helping to coordinate the successful visit, as well as professors Aleatha and Layne from KCC and Sara Burtis from GVSU for providing helpful information about the dual enrollment opportunities available to our Bearcats.
