Promoting Literacy Through Project-based Learning
Students in Ms. Samples' class at Battle Creek Central have been participating in a project-based learning (PBL) activity that gives them hands-on experience in the publication process while also promoting literacy in our community!

My students have been creating children’s books to publish and share! As we progress in discovering what makes a great children's book, our plan becomes more clear, with students clarifying daily what we need to do to prepare for our writing process. Students started by reviewing data and discovering that many in our society struggle with literacy. Next, they brainstormed some of the impacts that reading struggles could cause for both children and adults.
Each Project-based Learning (PBL) experience focuses on a key question. In this case, the students came up with the question, "What Makes A Good Children's Book" to lead their continued work. Students then took time to reflect on what books they enjoyed as children, or, alternatively, why they may not have enjoyed reading. The students were also thankful to receive direct feedback from second-grade BCPS students! Mr. See’s class at Fremont International Academy provided a list of all the favorite books.
These findings will be used to guide them as they begin working to create books that children in our community will enjoy with the overall goal of getting young children excited about reading. The students are excited to begin writing and are hoping to be able to share the stories with students in Mr. See's class later this school year.
One student, Yadira, is writing a book about fruit, offering text in both Spanish and English, while another student, Taz, is creating an interactive story about a family taking a walk and talking about what they see along the way.
Creating a children’s book through this PBL experience supports reading and writing engagement, metacognitive thinking, as well as communication skills. Through this project, students will not only gain experience planning, organizing, reviewing, revising, and reflecting, they will also strengthen their skills in taking personal responsibility working with a team, and problem-solving to complete tasks.
One special moment planned was a visit from a guest artist, Mr. Cody. He came to class recently to show students how to draw basic sketches. Ja’Tavion stated, “It was enjoyable. My favorite part was learning how to draw trees and people.”
Stay tuned for amazing books to be published!
