Afterschool programming plays a crucial role in providing increased learning opportunities and time to explore new passions and grow social-emotional skills for students.
To celebrate this year, each of our participating 21st Century elementary school programs participated in special Lights On Afterschool events. Plus, afterschool students in middle and high school participated in an advocacy day with a March On Washington twist - declaring their rights to out-of-school time offerings by marching on our very own Washington Street here in Battle Creek! Jim Haadsma, the Michigan House Representative for our district, joined them as well.
We are so thankful for partners like 21st Century, Kyd Network, and the Battle Creek YMCA for offering students additional opportunities to learn new things—such as science, community service, robotics, Tae Kwon Do, and poetry—and discover new skills.
Many thanks to all of the students and staff who came together to celebrate #LightsOnAfterschool and advocate for themselves by calling attention to the importance of afterschool programs.
