On December 7, 2022, the Northwestern Middle School (NWMS) counseling program and Junior Achievement held a magnificent Career Day for the school's 8th graders. Nearly a dozen presenters from the Battle Creek community encouraged and inspired students with information about a variety of careers throughout the school day. These areas included: banking and business, community affairs, healthcare, aviation, music, graphic design, human resources, and information technology.
NWMS counselor Mr. Wilson stated, “It was a great day today. Anytime students have opportunities planned for them to develop their mindsets and gain practice with healthy behaviors, such as self-improvement through career awareness, it is an amazing thing. Today our students took full advantage of this opportunity and did an outstanding job participating. The Community Partners, along with Northwestern staff, were great in making sure the students had a great experience.”
Following the event, students participated in a poll, the results of which echoed these positive sentiments. The data showed that 85% of students enjoyed Career Day, and 75% of students are excited to develop their future career plans. This could not be better timing, as Northwestern students will begin developing their Educational Developmental Plans that focus, in part, on their career goals when they return from the holiday break.
It's exciting to see our middle school students already connecting the dots between their education and their future careers. Thank you to Junior Achievement and our Northwestern staff for starting these conversations with students early as they prepare to enter BCCHS Career Academies in high school to learn and experience even more about career options.
