Excellence is on the Rise at Northwestern
The Northwestern Middle School music department has some exciting news to share — enrollment and participation are up...way up!
In the 2019-2020 school year there were 26 students enrolled in the band program and 12 enrolled in guitar. So far for the 2021-22 school year, band enrollment is up to 109 and guitar is up to 24. The program has more than tripled in participation overall! Thanks to the help of our awesome elementary music teachers, Northwestern's music director, Mr. Hoffman Zoomed into each 5th grade class for band instrument demonstrations and to get students signed up for band for this coming school year. It ended up paying off because there are **drum roll please** 84 5th grade students signed up for 6th grade band at NWMS for this coming school year!
Mr. Hoffman shared, "I cannot wait to begin working with these young musicians. This is also great news as NWMS transitions into a K-8 Visual and Performing Arts school [pending the results of the May 4 ballot proposal]."
"For the immediate future," he added, "I am looking to bring back the popular Pep Band started in the 2019-2020 school year and add to the mix Northwestern’s first-ever Jazz Band."
Over the past two years, students have been learning the art of jazz and improvisation and are eagerly awaiting the day when they can perform for the community.
I love band because I love the flow and the music, of course. Well, mostly the music. I really enjoy playing on my clarinet. Even though it's kind of difficult, I still love playing it because it's my comfort instrument. Band is a really cool and chill class and I love being in it!
