Recognizing the importance of having a variety of books available for every child, BCPS has been working over the last several years to increase the quantity and variety of books available in every classroom. Through the Classroom Libraries Project, we have been able to enhance every in-classroom collection in the district to between 750 and 1,500!
But to Valley View Elementary’s Janette Ford, there’s just something extra-special about a good old-fashioned school library, and she’s been working hard over the past few years to ensure the tradition lives on for Valley View students.
After retiring from a 37-year teaching career with BCPS, Mrs. Ford has spent the past six years as a Title I Tutor, offering individualized reading support for Valley View students but she also refers to herself as the building’s “unofficial librarian.” Since starting her role six years ago, Mrs. Ford has been working on revamping and renovating the school’s library from a storage and office space into one that is filled with books and is warm and welcoming to students.
In addition to creating a great space, Mrs. Ford has also been busy collecting and organizing books over the years to ensure a wide variety that is categorized by topic and reading level. Just how many books does the library hold? “The kids say we must have anywhere from 100 to one million books,” she said. According to Mrs. Ford, the library’s book supply has been built up over the years by donations from students, families, staff members, and even other community members who stop by and drop off boxes now and then.
Last week was the first time the school fully reopened the library to classrooms since the start of the pandemic. Now that the library is open, classes come through the library space each week and younger classes even get the opportunity to hear stories read to them by Mrs. Ford.
“We are so lucky to have this room,” Mrs. Ford shared. “Our students not only get access to books in their classrooms, but they also get the opportunity to experience what a library is and how it works when they come into the school library each week.”
The library has also served as a great resource for teachers in the building. “Whether our teachers are looking for books on rocks, the earth, baseball, or any other topic, they know they can reach out and let me know because I might have a larger selection on that specific topic than what they have available in the classroom.”
